Carbenicillin Phenyl Sodium
Carbenicillin Phenyl Sodium is a penicillin-type (beta-lactam) antibiotic that was historically used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, particularly Gram-negative organisms including Pseudomonas species. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death. This medication has been largely replaced by newer antibiotics with improved spectra and dosing profiles.
A penicillin-class antibiotic formerly used against certain Gram-negative bacterial infections, particularly Pseudomonas species.

Historically used for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, and infections caused by susceptible Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other Gram-negative bacteria. Often reserved for cases where other antibiotics were ineffective or inappropriate.
As a beta-lactam antibiotic, it inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), preventing cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains and resulting in bacterial cell lysis and death.
Like other penicillins, it can cause allergic reactions including anaphylaxis in susceptible individuals. Cross-reactivity with other beta-lactam antibiotics may occur. Requires appropriate culture and sensitivity testing prior to use. This medication is rarely used in modern practice due to the availability of more effective alternatives.
