FDA-approved for treating schizophrenia in adults, acute manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder, depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder, and major depressive disorder in adults.

Functions as a partial agonist at dopamine D2 and D3 receptors and serotonin 5-HT1A receptors, with particularly high affinity for D3 receptors. This partial agonism allows modulation of dopamine and serotonin activity in brain pathways involved in psychosis and mood regulation.

Common side effects include drowsiness, headache, nausea, and weight gain. May cause metabolic changes and extrapyramidal symptoms. Not recommended for elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis due to increased mortality risk. Requires regular monitoring and is typically taken once daily.
