Casodex is indicated for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer, often used in combination with luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) analog therapy. It may also be prescribed for early-stage prostate cancer as part of combined androgen blockade and for prevention of testosterone flare in patients beginning LHRH agonist therapy.

Casodex is a non-steroidal antiandrogen that competitively blocks the binding of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to androgen receptors in prostate cancer cells. By preventing androgens from activating these receptors, it inhibits the growth and proliferation of androgen-dependent tumor cells.

Casodex is typically used as part of combination therapy, not as a standalone treatment for early-stage prostate cancer. Common side effects include hot flashes, breast enlargement, and gastrointestinal symptoms. Liver function should be monitored during treatment. It is contraindicated in women, particularly during pregnancy, due to potential harm to male fetuses.
