Used to treat respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, urinary tract infections, bone and joint infections, and septicemia caused by susceptible bacteria.
As a second-generation cephalosporin, cefamandole inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to disruption of the bacterial cell wall and bacterial death.
Cross-reactivity with penicillin allergies may occur. May cause gastrointestinal side effects and requires careful use in patients with renal impairment. Like other cephalosporins, it is ineffective against organisms resistant to beta-lactam antibiotics.
