Treats acute bacterial infections including community-acquired pneumonia, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, acute maxillary sinusitis, acute otitis media, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, and uncomplicated skin and soft tissue infections caused by susceptible organisms.
As a cephalosporin, it inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), preventing the cross-linking of peptidoglycan layers and resulting in bacterial cell death.
Patients with penicillin allergies may have cross-reactivity (though uncommon). Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, and headache. May cause tooth discoloration in children. Should only be used for confirmed or suspected bacterial infections, not viral illnesses. Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve.
