Cefdinir is used to treat respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis; skin and soft tissue infections; ear infections (otitis media); and throat infections. It is effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria as determined by culture and susceptibility testing.
As a cephalosporin antibiotic, cefdinir inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This disruption weakens the bacterial cell wall, making the bacteria susceptible to osmotic pressure and resulting in bacterial cell death.
Patients with penicillin allergies may have cross-reactivity with cephalosporins; medical consultation is essential. Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, and rash. Antibiotics are ineffective against viral infections. Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve to prevent antibiotic resistance.
