Treats complicated urinary tract infections, pneumonia (including hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated), skin and soft tissue infections, intra-abdominal infections, and febrile neutropenia. Reserved for moderate-to-severe infections requiring IV antibiotic therapy.
Binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) and inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by blocking peptidoglycan cross-linking, leading to bacterial cell death. Its chemical structure allows excellent penetration through bacterial outer membranes.
Use with caution in patients with renal impairment (dose adjustment required), history of penicillin allergy, and elderly patients. Monitor for neurotoxicity (confusion, seizures) especially with renal dysfunction. Complete the full course even if symptoms improve. May cause diarrhea (including C. difficile colitis) and allergic reactions.
