Treatment of serious bacterial infections including hospital-acquired pneumonia, complicated urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and febrile neutropenia. Particularly useful when resistant organisms are suspected.
As a fourth-generation cephalosporin, it inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Its expanded gram-negative coverage compared to earlier generations makes it effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacteriaceae, while maintaining activity against gram-positive organisms including methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus.
Administered via intravenous injection. Cross-reactivity with penicillin allergies is possible. Common side effects include gastrointestinal symptoms, rash, and injection site reactions. Monitoring for superinfection and Clostridioides difficile infection is recommended. Use with caution in patients with renal impairment.
