Cefsulodin Sodium
Cefsulodin Sodium is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic with a pyridine side chain that provides enhanced activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa species. It is primarily used to treat serious infections caused by Pseudomonas bacteria, particularly in patients with cystic fibrosis, burns, or immunocompromised states where these resistant organisms are a concern.

Cefsulodin Sodium is indicated for the treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, including respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and skin/soft tissue infections, particularly in settings where Pseudomonas resistance is a concern.
As a beta-lactam antibiotic, Cefsulodin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), disrupting peptidoglycan cross-linking and leading to bacterial cell death. Its pyridine ring structure enhances its affinity for Pseudomonas organisms.
Cefsulodin Sodium is administered intravenously due to poor oral absorption. It should be used with caution in patients with penicillin allergy and requires regular monitoring of renal function during prolonged therapy. Like other beta-lactams, it has a relatively favorable safety profile with main concerns being potential hypersensitivity reactions and rare cases of renal toxicity.
