Treats acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSSI) and community-acquired bacterial pneumonia (CABP) caused by susceptible gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Particularly notable for activity against MRSA and other resistant organisms.

Binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), particularly PBP2a in resistant organisms, inhibiting transpeptidation during cell wall synthesis. This weakens the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell death.

Administered intravenously. Should be used only for confirmed or suspected bacterial infections. May cause hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis. Common side effects include nausea, rash, and diarrhea. Patients with known cephalosporin or penicillin allergies should use with caution. Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
