Treatment of respiratory tract infections (including pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, intra-abdominal infections, bone and joint infections, and septicemia. Often used for infections in immunocompromised patients and hospital-acquired infections.

As a beta-lactam antibiotic, ceftazidime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This disrupts the peptidoglycan layer of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell death. It has enhanced activity against gram-negative bacteria compared to earlier cephalosporin generations.

Administered intravenously or intramuscularly by healthcare professionals. Requires dose adjustment in patients with renal impairment. Cross-reactivity with penicillin allergy is possible. Common side effects include gastrointestinal symptoms, rash, and potential for superinfection. Should only be used when clearly indicated to prevent antibiotic resistance.
