Ceftibuten is used to treat acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, pharyngitis, tonsillitis, urinary tract infections, and acute otitis media (middle ear infection) caused by susceptible bacteria.
As a third-generation cephalosporin, ceftibuten inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to bacterial cell death. It has enhanced activity against gram-negative bacteria compared to earlier generations of cephalosporins.
Patients with known penicillin allergy should use caution, as cross-reactivity with cephalosporins is possible though uncommon. Common side effects include diarrhea, nausea, and headache. The medication should be taken as prescribed and the full course completed even if symptoms improve.
