Treatment of respiratory tract infections (such as bronchitis and pneumonia), urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, gonorrhea, and early Lyme disease. Often prescribed for ear, nose, and throat infections in both adults and children.

As a beta-lactam antibiotic, cefuroxime inhibits the synthesis of bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This weakens the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell death. It has an extended spectrum of activity compared to first-generation cephalosporins, covering both gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria.

Patients with penicillin allergies may have cross-reactivity risk. Common side effects include gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea and nausea. Should be taken with food to improve absorption. Complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve. May interact with certain medications and probiotics; spacing is recommended if taken together.
