Celexa is FDA-approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. It may also be prescribed off-label for conditions such as anxiety disorders, panic disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Celexa is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It works by blocking the reuptake of serotonin in the brain, which increases the amount of serotonin available to transmit messages between nerve cells. This enhancement of serotonin signaling is believed to help improve mood and reduce symptoms of depression.

Celexa carries a boxed warning about increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults under 25. It should not be used with MAOIs or within 14 days of stopping one. Abrupt discontinuation may cause discontinuation syndrome. The medication may prolong the QT interval and should be used cautiously in patients with heart conditions. Common side effects include nausea, dry mouth, drowsiness, and sexual dysfunction.
