Centany is indicated for the topical treatment of primary skin infections such as impetigo, as well as certain secondary skin infections. It is specifically effective against susceptible strains of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes.

Mupirocin, the active ingredient in Centany, works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It binds to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, preventing the incorporation of isoleucine into growing peptide chains, which stops bacterial growth and allows the body's immune system to eliminate the infection.

Centany is for topical use only and should not be applied to the eyes, nose, or mouth. Treatment is typically limited to 10 days. Patients with known hypersensitivity to mupirocin should not use this medication. As with all topical antibiotics, prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi.
