Cequa is indicated for the treatment of dry eye disease (keratoconjunctivitis sicca) in adults. It helps increase tear production in patients whose eyes do not produce enough natural tears, providing relief from symptoms such as burning, stinging, irritation, and grittiness associated with dry eyes.
Cequa contains cyclosporine 0.09%, an immunosuppressant that works as a calcineurin inhibitor. It reduces inflammation in the ocular surface tissues, including the lacrimal gland and conjunctiva. By decreasing this inflammation, the medication helps restore normal tear production and improves the health of the ocular surface.
Cequa is applied as eye drops, typically twice daily. Patients may experience initial burning or eye discomfort that usually improves with continued use. Contact lenses should be removed before application and not reinserted for at least 15 minutes after using the medication. It may take several weeks of regular use to notice full therapeutic effects. Patients with a history of herpes keratitis or active ocular infections should use this medication with caution.
