Historical usage information

Cetrimide is used for disinfection of the skin before surgical procedures, cleansing of wounds and burns, preoperative skin preparation, and cleaning of medical equipment. It may also be found in some antiseptic soaps and shampoos for skin and scalp conditions.

As a cationic surfactant and quaternary ammonium compound, Cetrimide disrupts the cell membrane integrity of microorganisms. It is effective against gram-positive bacteria, some gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and certain viruses by causing membrane damage and cell lysis.

For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes, ears, and mucous membranes. May cause skin irritation or hypersensitivity reactions in some individuals. Should not be applied to large areas of burned or extensively damaged skin due to potential systemic absorption. Not for ingestion.
