Used to treat schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorders, other psychotic conditions, severe anxiety, and behavioral disturbances. May also be used for nausea and vomiting in some cases.

Functions primarily as a dopamine D2 receptor antagonist, reducing dopaminergic transmission in the mesolimbic pathway. Also exhibits antagonist activity at alpha-adrenergic, muscarinic acetylcholine, and histamine H1 receptors, contributing to its sedative and anticholinergic effects.

May cause significant sedation, orthostatic hypotension, and anticholinergic side effects. Requires monitoring for tardive dyskinesia and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease, seizures, or narrow-angle glaucoma. May interact with other CNS depressants and anticholinergic medications.
