Cinqair is a brand-name medication containing reslizumab, a monoclonal antibody used as an add-on maintenance treatment for severe eosinophilic asthma in adults. Severe eosinophilic asthma in adults (18 years and older) who are not adequately controlled with standard inhaled corticosteroid-based asthma medications. It is used as an add-on maintenance therapy, not for acute bronchospasm or sudden breathing problems.
Cinqair contains reslizumab, an interleukin-5 (IL-5) antagonist monoclonal antibody. IL-5 is a cytokine that promotes the growth, activation, and survival of eosinophils. By binding to IL-5, reslizumab blocks its interaction with eosinophil receptors, reducing eosinophil levels in the blood and tissues and thereby decreasing airway inflammation characteristic of eosinophilic asthma.
Administered as an intravenous infusion by a healthcare professional every 4 weeks. Requires monitoring for hypersensitivity reactions during and after infusion. Regular blood monitoring for eosinophil counts may be needed. Not a rescue medication and should not be used for acute asthma attacks. Abrupt discontinuation of asthma medications is not recommended. Patients should be monitored for potential adverse effects including anaphylaxis.
