Treatment of hypertriglyceridemia and mixed dyslipidemia when dietary measures alone are insufficient. May be used in patients with cardiovascular risk factors associated with abnormal lipid profiles.
Ciprofibrate is a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPAR-α) agonist. It increases lipoprotein lipase activity, enhances fatty acid oxidation, and reduces hepatic VLDL (very-low-density lipoprotein) production, leading to decreased circulating triglyceride levels.
Should always be used alongside dietary modifications and lifestyle changes. Regular monitoring of liver function and muscle enzymes is recommended. May increase risk of myopathy, especially when combined with statins. Contraindicated in patients with severe liver or kidney impairment and during pregnancy. Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances and headache.
