Treatment of serious infections caused by susceptible gram-negative bacteria including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, and intra-abdominal infections. Often used when oral ciprofloxacin is not appropriate.

Inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, and repair, effectively killing susceptible bacteria.

Administered intravenously by healthcare professionals. May cause tendinitis and tendon rupture (particularly in patients over 60, those on corticosteroids, or transplant patients). Can prolong QT interval. Not recommended for children unless no alternatives exist due to potential effects on cartilage development. Requires adequate hydration. Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances, headache, and dizziness.
