Management of hypertensive emergencies, including postoperative hypertension and acute heart failure with elevated blood pressure. Also used for inducing controlled hypotension during surgical procedures to minimize blood loss.

Acts as a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker that selectively inhibits L-type calcium channels in vascular smooth muscle, causing vasodilation and subsequent reduction in blood pressure. The IV formulation allows for rapid onset (1-2 minutes) and short duration of action.

Must be administered in an acute care setting with continuous hemodynamic monitoring. Contraindicated in patients with severe aortic stenosis or allergies to soybeans or eggs. Requires dose titration due to individual response variation and should not be used for extended periods beyond 72-96 hours.
