Treats various bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis), skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, and certain intra-abdominal infections. Also used for serious infections when penicillin antibiotics are contraindicated or ineffective.

As a prodrug, it is hydrolyzed to clindamycin in the body. The active drug binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of bacteria, inhibiting protein synthesis and preventing bacterial growth. It is effective against most gram-positive bacteria and many anaerobic organisms.

May cause gastrointestinal side effects including diarrhea and has a significant risk of causing Clostridioides difficile-associated colitis. Should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to clindamycin or lincomycin. May interact with neuromuscular blocking agents and requires appropriate monitoring during prolonged therapy.
