Clobex is FDA-approved for the treatment of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis. It may also be used for other inflammatory skin conditions such as lichen planus and seborrheic dermatitis that require high-potency topical corticosteroid therapy.
Clobetasol propionate, the active ingredient, works by binding to glucocorticoid receptors in skin cells. This suppresses the inflammatory response, reduces itching, and decreases skin cell overgrowth associated with psoriasis.
As a high-potency corticosteroid, Clobex should not be used on the face, groin, or axillae unless directed by a physician. It should not be used for extended periods or on large body surface areas due to risk of systemic absorption. Not recommended for use in children under 18 years of age. Common side effects may include skin irritation, burning, and dryness at the application site.
