Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections, bone and joint infections, and respiratory tract infections caused by penicillinase-producing Staphylococcus aureus. May also be used for prophylaxis in certain surgical procedures.
Cloxacillin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), preventing cross-linking of peptidoglycan chains. Its resistance to penicillinase allows it to remain effective against bacteria that produce this inactivating enzyme.
Contraindicated in patients with penicillin allergy. May cause GI disturbances, allergic reactions including anaphylaxis, and hematologic effects. Administered by deep intramuscular injection. Cross-reactivity with other penicillins and cephalosporins should be considered in allergic patients.
