Treatment of acute, uncomplicated malaria infections caused by Plasmodium falciparum in adults and children weighing at least 5 kg (11 lbs). It is not used for malaria prevention (prophylaxis) or for severe/complicated malaria requiring hospitalization.
Coartem contains artemether (an artemisinin derivative) and lumefantrine. Artemether rapidly reduces the number of malaria parasites in the bloodstream, while lumefantrine eliminates any remaining parasites. This combination helps ensure effective treatment and reduces the risk of parasite resistance.
Coartem should be taken with food or milk to ensure proper absorption of lumefantrine. The full treatment course must be completed even if symptoms improve. Common side effects include headache, dizziness, and loss of appetite. Patients should inform their doctor of any liver problems, as Coartem may affect liver function.
