Colace is used to treat occasional constipation and to prevent straining during bowel movements. It is particularly useful for patients who have just undergone surgery, those with heart conditions, individuals with painful hemorrhoids or anal fissures, and postpartum patients.
Colace works as an anionic surfactant that increases the absorption of water and fats into the stool, allowing it to absorb more liquid. This process softens the fecal mass, making it easier to pass without straining. Results typically occur within 1-3 days of regular use.
Colace should be taken with plenty of water. Do not take with mineral oil as this may increase absorption of the mineral oil, which can be harmful. Prolonged use (beyond 1 week) without medical supervision is not recommended. If you experience sudden abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or have difficulty swallowing, consult your healthcare provider before use. Always follow dosage instructions on the label or as directed by your doctor.
