Contrave is indicated for chronic weight management in adults with obesity (BMI of 30 or greater) or those who are overweight (BMI of 27 or greater) with at least one weight-related comorbidity such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or dyslipidemia.
Contrave combines naltrexone, an opioid antagonist, with bupropion, an antidepressant, to reduce appetite and food cravings. The two medications work on different areas of the brain involved in hunger and reward pathways to help control eating behavior.
Contrave may increase risk of suicidal thoughts and should not be used with certain medications. It is contraindicated in patients with uncontrolled hypertension, seizure disorders, or those taking opioid analgesics. Common side effects include nausea, constipation, headache, and insomnia. This medication should be used only as prescribed by a healthcare provider.
