Cortrophin is used to treat conditions including infantile spasms (West syndrome), multiple sclerosis exacerbations, rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, severe allergic reactions, and certain dermatological conditions. Treatment decisions are made by healthcare providers based on individual patient needs.
As a form of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), Cortrophin binds to receptors in the adrenal cortex and stimulates the production and release of endogenous corticosteroids, primarily cortisol. This increased corticosteroid levels help suppress inflammatory and immune responses in the body.
Cortrophin is administered by injection, typically intramuscular or subcutaneous. Common side effects may include fluid retention, increased blood sugar, mood changes, and elevated blood pressure. It is contraindicated in patients with active infections, uncontrolled hypertension, or certain adrenal disorders. Patients should be monitored regularly by their healthcare provider during treatment. Unlike synthetic corticosteroids, ACTH may stimulate more natural corticosteroid production patterns.
