Crovalimab-Akkz is used for the treatment of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) and atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS), both rare disorders involving abnormal complement system activation leading to red blood cell destruction and related complications.
This medication is a monoclonal antibody that binds to complement protein C5, blocking its cleavage into C5a and C5b. This prevents the formation of the membrane attack complex (MAC), thereby reducing complement-mediated hemolysis of red blood cells.
Crovalimab-Akkz is administered as a subcutaneous injection, which may allow for at-home administration. Patients should be monitored for infections, particularly meningococcal infections, as complement inhibitors increase susceptibility. Vaccination is recommended prior to starting therapy. The medication should only be prescribed by healthcare providers experienced in managing complement disorders.
