Treats androgen-dependent conditions including prostate cancer, severe hirsutism and acne in women, male pattern baldness, and is used in feminizing hormone therapy for transgender women. May also be prescribed for hypersexuality in men to reduce libido.

Blocks androgen receptors at target tissues, preventing male sex hormones (testosterone and DHT) from exerting their effects. Also suppresses gonadotropin secretion, which reduces testosterone production by the testes.

Requires regular liver function monitoring due to hepatotoxicity risk. Contraindicated in pregnancy, liver disease, and history of thromboembolic events. Can cause feminizing effects in male patients including breast enlargement. May interact with other hormonal medications. Should only be used under specialist supervision.
