Dacogen is indicated for the treatment of myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS), including previously treated and untreated, de novo, and secondary MDS of all French-American-British (FAB) subtypes, as well as refractory anemia. It is also used in certain cases of acute myeloid leukemia.
Dacogen is a DNA hypomethylating agent. It works by inhibiting DNA methyltransferases, which are enzymes responsible for adding methyl groups to DNA. This hypomethylation can reverse the silencing of genes that control normal cellular differentiation and proliferation, potentially restoring normal apoptotic pathways in abnormal cells.
Dacogen is administered by intravenous infusion, typically in cycles. Common side effects include myelosuppression (low blood counts), fatigue, fever, and nausea. Patients require regular blood count monitoring during treatment. It should not be used during pregnancy due to potential harm to the fetus. Treatment should be managed by healthcare providers experienced in chemotherapy and hematologic disorders.
