Prevention of venous thromboembolic events (VTE) in patients undergoing surgery, particularly orthopedic procedures; treatment of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE); prevention of clotting in patients with reduced mobility; used in certain cancer patients to prevent thromboembolic complications.
Dalteparin enhances the activity of antithrombin III, a natural inhibitor of clotting factors (primarily factor Xa and to a lesser extent factor IIa/thrombin). This increases the blood's ability to prevent existing clots from growing and reduces the risk of new clots forming.
Administered by subcutaneous injection; requires careful monitoring in patients with renal impairment, low platelet counts, or history of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT); may increase bleeding risk; dose adjustments may be needed in elderly or underweight patients; regular monitoring of anti-Xa levels may be required in certain clinical situations.
