Darbepoetin Alfa: A Patient Guide
Darbepoetin alfa is a medicine called an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent that helps the body make more red blood cells. It is used to treat anemia caused by chronic kidney disease or certain chemotherapy regimens. It is not appropriate for every type of anemia, so the cause of anemia should be confirmed before treatment begins.
Darbepoetin alfa can improve anemia in selected patients, usually given by injection on a schedule determined by a healthcare professional. Because it can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of blood clots or other serious complications, regular monitoring is important.
This medication carries a boxed (black box) warning — the strongest type of FDA warning. Review the full prescribing information before use.
