Dayvigo is FDA-approved for the treatment of insomnia in adults, specifically addressing sleep onset difficulty (trouble falling asleep) and/or sleep maintenance difficulty (trouble staying asleep). It is intended for short-term use and should be taken only at bedtime when adequate time for a full night's sleep (at least 7 hours) is available.

Dayvigo belongs to a drug class called dual orexin receptor antagonists (DORAs). It works by blocking the activity of orexin neuropeptides (orexin A and orexin B) that bind to orexin receptors OX1R and OX2R. By inhibiting these receptors, Dayvigo reduces the wake-promoting signals in the brain, helping to initiate and maintain sleep.

Dayvigo may cause next-day drowsiness, impaired alertness, and cognitive or motor impairment, particularly in the first few hours after taking it. Patients should avoid driving or engaging in hazardous activities until they feel fully alert. Common side effects may include headache, somnolence, and unusual dreams. Dayvigo is contraindicated in patients with narcolepsy and should be used with caution in patients with a history of depression, substance abuse, or complex sleep behaviors. Alcohol should be avoided while taking this medication.
