Treats inflammatory conditions (arthritis, dermatitis), allergic reactions, asthma exacerbations, certain cancers (leukemia, lymphoma), adrenal insufficiency, and reduces cerebral edema. Also used as an antiemetic during chemotherapy and for COVID-19 severe inflammation.

Acts as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, inhibiting phospholipase A2 and reducing production of inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Suppresses immune cell function and reduces capillary permeability to decrease swelling and inflammation.

Long-term use requires gradual tapering to avoid adrenal suppression. Monitor for side effects including weight gain, osteoporosis, elevated blood glucose, mood changes, and increased infection risk. Contraindicated in systemic fungal infections. Available by prescription only.
