Deflazacort
Deflazacort is a corticosteroid prodrug used primarily to treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in patients. It works by converting to its active form, which binds to glucocorticoid receptors to reduce inflammation and suppress immune responses that contribute to muscle damage.

Primarily used for Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) to improve muscle strength and function. Also used for other inflammatory and autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, and nephrotic syndrome when other treatments are insufficient.
Deflazacort is a prodrug that converts to its active metabolite, 21-desDFZ, which binds to glucocorticoid receptors. This interaction modulates gene expression to produce anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects, reducing muscle inflammation and slowing the progression of muscle weakness in DMD.
Common side effects include weight gain, increased appetite, mood changes, and fluid retention. Long-term use requires monitoring of blood glucose, bone density, and growth in pediatric patients. Should not be discontinued abruptly after prolonged treatment. May interact with other medications affecting CYP3A4.
