Deoxycholic acid is FDA-approved for the treatment of moderate to severe convexity or fullness associated with submental fat (double chin) in adults. It is used as a cosmetic treatment when diet and exercise have not adequately addressed submental fullness.
When injected into subcutaneous fat, deoxycholic acid disrupts the cell membrane of adipocytes (fat cells), causing them to be destroyed. The body then metabolizes and clears these destroyed fat cells naturally over time, resulting in a reduction of submental fullness.
Multiple treatment sessions (typically 2-4, up to 6) are usually required for optimal results. Common side effects include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, and redness at the injection site. Should only be administered by trained healthcare professionals, as improper injection technique can cause tissue damage including skin ulceration or nerve injury.
