Prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery, particularly hip or knee replacement surgery. It may also be considered for other surgical settings where VTE prevention is needed.

Desirudin is a direct thrombin inhibitor that binds reversibly to both free thrombin and thrombin bound to fibrin, preventing the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin and inhibiting thrombus formation in the coagulation cascade.

Administered by subcutaneous injection. Contraindicated in patients with severe renal impairment, active bleeding, or known hypersensitivity. Risk of bleeding complications requires careful monitoring. Not typically used with other anticoagulants due to increased hemorrhage risk.
