Desmopressin Acetate
Desmopressin Acetate is a synthetic analog of the natural hormone vasopressin (antidiuretic hormone). It works primarily by increasing water reabsorption in the kidneys, thereby reducing urine output and increasing urine concentration. This medication is used to treat conditions involving excessive urination and abnormal bleeding.

Primarily used for central diabetes insipidus (a condition causing excessive thirst and urination due to low vasopressin levels), nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting) in children, and von Willebrand disease (a bleeding disorder). May also be used for post-operative polyuria and nocturia associated with multiple sclerosis.
Acts on V2 receptors in the renal collecting ducts to promote water reabsorption by inserting aquaporin-2 water channels. This increases urine osmolality and decreases urine volume. At higher doses, it may also act on V1 receptors causing vasoconstriction and improved hemostasis.
Risk of hyponatremia (low blood sodium) increases with excessive fluid intake—patients should follow fluid restrictions carefully. Contraindicated in nephrogenic diabetes insipidus and conditions predisposing to fluid overload (severe heart failure, SIADH). Common side effects include headache, facial flushing, and nausea. Available as nasal spray, oral tablets, and injectable formulations.
