Used to treat severe allergic reactions, acute asthma exacerbations, inflammatory conditions (such as arthritis, colitis, skin disorders), certain cancers, cerebral edema, adrenal insufficiency, and as part of chemotherapy regimens. Also employed to reduce nausea associated with chemotherapy.
Functions as a glucocorticoid receptor agonist, suppressing inflammatory gene expression and reducing the production of inflammatory mediators. It decreases immune cell activity, reduces vascular permeability, and modulates carbohydrate, protein, and lipid metabolism.
Should be used with caution in patients with infections (may mask symptoms), diabetes (may raise blood glucose), osteoporosis, peptic ulcers, or those on immunosuppressants. Prolonged use requires gradual tapering to avoid adrenal suppression. May cause mood changes, insomnia, fluid retention, and increased infection risk.
