Dextromoramide was indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe pain, including post-operative pain, trauma-related pain, and pain associated with cancer or other serious conditions when weaker opioids or non-opioid analgesics were inadequate.
As a potent opioid agonist, dextromoramide binds primarily to mu-opioid receptors in the central nervous system, altering the perception of pain and producing analgesia. It also produces effects typical of the opioid class, including sedation and respiratory depression.
Like all opioids, dextromoramide carried significant risks including respiratory depression, physical dependence, tolerance, and potential for abuse. The drug has been withdrawn from many markets worldwide due to these safety concerns and is rarely prescribed today. It should only be used under strict medical supervision, and patients should be monitored for signs of dependence or adverse effects.
