Treatment of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) and acute kidney injury when used as part of a continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) or automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) regimen. Used to remove waste products and excess fluid when kidney function is severely compromised.

The solution is infused into the peritoneal cavity where it dwells for a prescribed period. Dextrose in the solution creates an osmotic gradient that draws waste products, solutes, and excess fluid from the blood across the peritoneal membrane into the dialysate. The fluid is then drained and replaced with fresh solution.

Must be used under medical supervision as part of a complete peritoneal dialysis program. Requires surgical placement of a peritoneal catheter. Potential risks include peritonitis, catheter-related infections, electrolyte imbalances, and metabolic complications. Requires regular monitoring of kidney function and fluid status. Not for intravenous use.
