Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections caused by penicillin-resistant staphylococci, as well as streptococcal infections including pneumonia, bronchitis, and other respiratory tract infections. Also used for infected wounds, abscesses, and bone infections.

Binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) on bacterial cell walls, inhibiting the transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis. This weakens the cell wall, causing osmotic lysis and bacterial death. Its penicillinase-resistant structure allows it to remain effective against bacteria that produce penicillinase enzymes.

Should not be used in patients with penicillin hypersensitivity due to risk of cross-reactivity. May cause gastrointestinal side effects like nausea and diarrhea. Full course must be completed as prescribed. May reduce effectiveness of oral contraceptives and interact with blood thinners. Report any signs of allergic reaction, severe diarrhea, or new infections during treatment.
