Treatment of infections caused by susceptible gram-negative bacteria, including tuberculosis (particularly in combination therapy), tularemia, plague, and certain serious infections when other antibiotics are unsuitable.

Binds irreversibly to the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting protein synthesis and causing misreading of mRNA, resulting in bactericidal activity against susceptible organisms.

Ototoxicity (hearing damage) and nephrotoxicity (kidney damage) are significant risks; requires monitoring of auditory and renal function. Use with caution in patients with pre-existing hearing or kidney problems. Not typically used in modern clinical practice due to availability of safer alternatives.
