Used for labor induction at term, treatment of missed abortion or intrauterine fetal demise during the second trimester, and management of postpartum hemorrhage when other measures fail. In veterinary medicine, it is used for similar reproductive indications in animals.

Dinoprost is a synthetic analog of prostaglandin F2α that binds to FP receptors in uterine smooth muscle, triggering powerful contractions. It also promotes luteolysis (breakdown of the corpus luteum) by acting on CL receptors in the ovaries, reducing progesterone production which supports its abortifacient effects.

Contraindicated in patients with active asthma, glaucoma, or uterine surgery history. Must be administered under close medical supervision with fetal and uterine monitoring during labor induction. Can cause bronchoconstriction and increased intraocular pressure. Not for unmonitored outpatient use.
