Used for the treatment of peptic ulcer disease and gastric hyperacidity, as well as management of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). Largely replaced by newer medications like H2 antagonists and proton pump inhibitors for ulcer treatment.
Acts as a competitive antagonist at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, blocking the action of acetylcholine on smooth muscle, secretory glands, and other tissues. This reduces gastric acid secretion and decreases sweat production.
Common anticholinergic side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention, and tachycardia. Should be used with caution in patients with glaucoma, benign prostatic hyperplasia, or gastrointestinal obstruction. May cause drowsiness; avoid operating machinery. Use is limited due to availability of safer alternatives.
