Prevention of diphtheria caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, a bacterial infection that can cause severe breathing difficulties, heart complications, and nerve damage. Routinely given to infants and children beginning at 2 months of age, with booster doses recommended for adolescents and adults.
Contains inactivated diphtheria toxin (toxoid) adsorbed to aluminum adjuvant, which triggers the immune system to produce protective antibodies against the diphtheria toxin without causing active infection.
Should not be administered to individuals with severe allergic reactions to previous doses or vaccine components. Common side effects include injection site pain, swelling, redness, and mild fever. Not a treatment for active diphtheria infection. Medical evaluation should be sought for serious or persistent symptoms.
