Disalcid is used to treat pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and other musculoskeletal conditions. It may also be used for general pain relief and fever reduction when appropriate.
Disalcid contains salsalate, which is metabolized to salicylic acid in the body. It works by inhibiting cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, thereby reducing the production of prostaglandins that contribute to pain, inflammation, and fever.
Like other NSAIDs, Disalcid may increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding, heart attack, or stroke. It should be avoided by patients with aspirin sensitivity or active peptic ulcers. Patients with kidney or liver impairment, dehydration, or those taking blood thinners should use this medication with caution and under medical supervision.
