Published: July 26, 2026Updated: August 27, 2026

Dopexamine Hydrochloride is a synthetic catecholamine with dopamine-like properties used primarily for hemodynamic support. It acts on dopamine receptors and beta-adrenergic receptors to increase cardiac output and improve blood flow to vital organs, particularly the kidneys and splanchnic circulation. This medication is typically administered in acute care settings such as intensive care units and during cardiac surgery.

Used for acute heart failure, low cardiac output states, and hemodynamic support during and after cardiac surgery. May also be used in septic shock and other conditions requiring inotropic support.

Acts primarily on dopamine D1 and D2 receptors as well as beta-2 adrenergic receptors, with some beta-1 activity. This produces vasodilation (particularly in renal and splanchnic vessels), increased myocardial contractility, and improved cardiac output without significantly increasing heart rate or myocardial oxygen consumption.

Administered by intravenous infusion in monitored settings. Common side effects include tachycardia, hypotension, nausea, and arrhythmias. Use requires careful hemodynamic monitoring. Contraindicated in patients with uncorrected tachyarrhythmias or pheochromocytoma. Not available in all countries.
